Original Oratory - An oratory is a speech delivered from memory, but the student may quote up to 150 words from another source. notes are not permitted, and the time limit is ten 10 minutes.
Extemporaneous Speaking - In the extemporaneous speech, the speaker draws a topic which is based on a current event. He or she has 30 minutes to prepare the speech, and 7 minutes to deliver it. No notes may be used.
Poetry Interpretation -This event consists of an oral interpretation of one long poem, a cutting of a long poem, or several shorter poems related by a common theme. Manuscripts should be used 50% of the presentation time; the time limit is 10 minutes and must include an introduction. MHSAA form is required.
Prose Interpretation - This event consists of an oral interpretation of short story, cutting from a novel (fiction or nonfiction) etc. No poetry or drama may be used. The time limit is 10 minutes, it must have an introduction. And, manuscripts should be used 50% of the time. MHSAA form is required.
Dramatic Interpretation - This event consists of the presentation of a memorized cutting from a published work which is serious in nature. It must include an introduction; time requirement is ten minutes. MHSAA form required.
Humorous Interpretation - This event follows the same rules as dramatic interpretation except the memorized cutting must be humorous in nature.
Impromptu Speaking - Each cotestant will select one of three topics. Then he or she will have a total of seven minutes to prepare and deliver a speech on the topic which is slected. No notes may be used.
Duo Interpretation - Two students present oral interpretation of a script. The script must be memorized and looking at one another and touching is not allowed. The selection should not exceed 10 minutes.
T.V. Commentary - Contestant will be given news scripts and 20 minutes to cut news scripts into a 3 minute news cast. There is a 5 second grace period. Contestants are responsible for bringing their own supplies (tape, scissors, folder, etc.) Table and chair will be provided.
Declamation - open to freshmen and sophomores only. Students must memorize a speech that has been previously been given by someone else. Introduction must be included. 10 minutes is the time limit.
Storytelling - a student must memorize and tell a story. Time limit is 5 minutes and must include an introduction. Theme changes for each tournament.
Lincoln Douglas Debate - Individual value debate. Topic is the current NFL topic. Topic changes every two months. Time format is 6 3 7 3 4 6 3.
Policy Debate - Team policy debate. Topic is the current NFL topic. Topic changes once a year. Time format is 8 3 8 3 8 3 8 3 5 5 5 5.
Public Forum Debate - Team debate on current issues. Topic is the current NFL topic. Topic changes once a month. Time format is 4 4 3 4 4 3 2 2 3 1 1.
Student Congress - Individual students debate bills and resolutions in a congressional format.
